Executive summary
- The number of building plans approved by the City of Windhoek declined to 130 from 288 that was recorded for November 2020. See Figure 1.
- During the month of December 2020, the City of Windhoek approved a total of 84 addition plans,30 house plans,14 wall plans,1 commercial plan and 1 pool plan, respectively.
- Addition and House plans were the main drivers of the number of building plans approved for December 2020.
- The City of Windhoek approved a total of 2346 building plans valued at N$ 1 883 589 910 for the year 2020.
Analysis
- On an annual basis the number of building plans approved for Windhoek increased to 30.35 % for December 2020 from -6.56% that was recorded for December 2019. (See figure2).
- The City of Windhoek indicated that the highest number of building plans approved for December 2020, were from Windhoek suburb, with 24 plans (16 addition plans, 5 house plans,2 wall plans and 1 commercial plan), valued at N$ 39 685 950.
- Khomasdal suburb, had the second highest number of building plans approved with a total of 21 plans (15 additions, 4 house plans and 2 walls), valued at N$ 7 052 000 for December 2020.
- The monthly decline in the number of building plans approved for December 2020 by the city of Windhoek was negatively affected by the holiday as most of the construction companies closed for the festive season.
Outlook
- Windhoek’s construction industry continues to face strong headwinds as consumers and businesses confidence has waned due to the covid-19 induced measures and the uncertain economic outlook.
- We anticipate a subdued construction environment in the short to medium term.
